Every October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a useful nudge to fix the basics — the same basics that stop most real-world attacks. You don’t need a big budget or a long project. Here are five high-impact steps a Metro Detroit business can take this month.
1. Turn on multi-factor authentication everywhere
If you do one thing this month, do this. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) blocks the overwhelming majority of account-takeover attempts, even when a password is stolen. Start with email, Microsoft 365, banking, and any remote-access tools. It’s the single best return on effort in security.
2. Run a quick phishing gut-check with your team
Most breaches start with a convincing email. Spend ten minutes at a team meeting reviewing what a modern phishing message looks like — a fake invoice, a “your password expired” login page, a spoofed request from the boss. Awareness is cheap and it works. Ongoing cybersecurity programs make this a habit rather than a once-a-year talk.
3. Confirm your backups actually restore
Ransomware’s whole business model depends on you not being able to recover. Verify that a recent backup exists, that a copy lives off your network, and that someone has actually tested a restore. If you can’t answer those confidently, that’s your project for the month. See our business continuity guidance for what “good” looks like.
4. Update and patch what’s overdue
Attackers scan for known, unpatched holes. Make sure Windows, browsers, and key applications are current, and that no critical systems are running unsupported software. Managed patching removes this from your to-do list — it’s a core part of managed IT.
5. Tighten who has access to what
Over time, people accumulate access they no longer need, and former employees sometimes keep it. Review admin rights, shared logins, and any accounts for people who have left. Least-privilege access limits how far any single compromise can spread.
Make the wins stick past October
Awareness Month is a great starting line, not a finish line. Bezalu helps Metro Detroit businesses turn these basics into an always-on program. Build your IT plan to see where your quick wins are.
